The Sixties Vancouver was a centre for Counter Culture Revolution and I living in the West End at that time I could observe and absorb. The Retinal Circus on Davie Street and the folk scene on 4th, Avenue in Kits featured many artists who were anti war (Vietnam)

As an example Country Joe McDonald in his “I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-To-Die Rag ” had the crowd at the Circus singing, “you can be the first ones on your block to have your boy come home in a box” which was was surreal.

The scope of the Sixties Vancouver cultural revolution happening which focused on Peace and the phrase” make love not war” and support for Civil Rights in the US is only realized by looking back through the filter of time.

Canada was anti war and the late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau supported the anti-war movement in Vietnam so when established diplomatic relations with Vietnam he pissed of some in America .

This Tom Northcott song with the visuals created by the Kitsilano 4th Avenue Reunion takes me back to the softer side of the sixties, sunbathing on English Bay and Kits Beach and attending Flower Power events in that time.

Country Joe sang at Woodstock and “There are 300,000 of you fuckers out there and I don’t know how you expect to stop the war in Vietnam if you cant sing any louder than that”.

So when the crowd which was actually over 400,000 sang out the words enthusiastically it sent a message that could not be ignored.
