The book Entrevistas 50 Sculptures in Steel by Guillermo Mac Lean.

I acquired this book through a personal meeting with the author. He is a motorcyclist and we were conversing about bikes and art..

He had traveled the globe interviewing sculptors for an exposition in Monterey and the book encapsulates those interviews. Guillermo was kind enough to present me with a signed a copy of his book,

He informed me that he had chosen to immigrate to Canada and live in Powell River B.C. Our conversation turned from motorcycles to art when Guillermo told me he was a steel sculptor.

I liked sculpture and was given a greater appreciation for it by hanging out with Lillian Jensen and Peter Basten at the Vancouver School of Art in the ’60s.

I told him that my favorites were Alberto Giacometti, Henry Moore, and the instructor at the Vancouver Art School Gerhard Class, whose piece, the sundial at English Bay in Vancouver, I still consider one of the best functional art pieces I have seen.

It was, my Henry Moore comment that, had Guillermo mention his meeting Sir Anthony Caro who apprenticed with Moore. He met with Caro during his word tour to interview artists for an exposition in Monterrey, Mexico,

He has written a book about those artists that included those interviews called 50 Sculptures in Steel.

He sent me this copy of the book with the inscription ” Mr. Fraser (Duncan) With respect for your love of Art. Guillermo Maclean. PS: see page 179″

That page is his interview with Anthony Caro who apprenticed with Henry Moore and completed this wee circle about the meeting.

As a footnote, Lillian Jensen is an Award-winning jewelry designer and I lost track of Peter in the haze of time. Peter was very talented, I have a couple of small pieces he did and I treasure them.

It has been a while since the original post so I thought you might like this most recent post by Guillermo.
